SAP finally filed its expected protest of what it claims is the “grossly excessive” $1.3 billion jury award to Oracle stemming from Oracle’s suit against SAP and its now-defunct third-party maintenance operation TomorrowNow, which SAP admitted illegally copied Oracle’s IP.
SAP thinks it should pay no more than $408.7 million, 10 times more than SAP figured was the most it should pay Oracle during the three-week trial last year.
It wants a do-over trial if Oracle won’t take the lower number, which is exactly the amount Oracle’s expert put the company’s damages at. read more

Google lost its fleeting bid last week to get Oracle’s copyright infringement claims thrown out of court so it won’t be standing there accused of both copyright and patent infringement in the Java-Android suit against it.
The judge wouldn’t even let Google file a motion. He isn’t convinced Oracle’s copyright claims don’t have merit.
Google can ask again after there’s more discovery, but that’ll take a while.
Patent watcher Florian Mueller found Oracle’s successfully opposing letter “the single most interesting document in this whole lawsuit to date as far as the copyright part of the case is concerned.” read more
This white paper from Fiorano presents a performance analysis of publish/subscribe and PTP messaging throughput of the following JMS Servers:
FioranoMQ® 9.1.1, SonicMQ 7.6, Tibco EMS 4.4.0, ActiveMQ 5.3.0, Jboss Messaging 1.4.4, Sun JAVA MQ 4.3, IBM WebSphere MQ 7.0
All comparisons are performed using the independent benchmark test harness and tests released by Progress Software, Inc. The tests include a number of scenarios for both Publish/Subscribe (Topics) and Point to Point (Queue) message scenarios, stressing out the JMS Servers in a variety of simulated real-world scenarios. These JMS tests and test harness have been the international standard for JMS testing since 2003. read more
Cisco, which needs to shore up its operations after three disappointing quarters, is ripping up its e-mail.
After 13 months of trying to elbow into hosted e-mail with a controlled test market release, it’s abandoning the SaaS project saying something about learning “that customers have come to view their email as a mature and commoditized tool versus a long-term differentiated element of their collaboration strategy. We’ve also heard that customers are eager to embrace emerging collaboration tools such as social software and video.”read more
Recently had a problem where Import/Export was not working. I kept getting an interesting Error Message.
What was really interesting about this was the user that was referenced, mxmc_admin. Now this is interesting, because during the Identity Store creation process, you are prompted to use mxmc_rt as the user and there is no time during the install that you are asked to create a JAVA based connection string using mxmc_admin.
This started a great deal of troubleshooting and conversations with people who have a great deal of knowledge with IDM's moving parts. Ultimately we wound up looking at the options in IDM's MMC interface.read more
Putting a cloud integration and Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) strategy in play prepares enterprises for the next generation of flexible, distributed and scalable cloud-enabled business applications while facilitating greater operational efficiency, generating more revenue, and helping businesses enter new markets.
This free guide from Fiorano discusses various architectures for cloud-based integration in use today, together with the pros and cons of each such architecture. This is followed by a discussion of the architecture requirements for a general purpose, cloud-enabled ESB platform that enables the seamless integration of on-premise, public and private cloud applications. read more

Which mobile device should I target for my application? That's one of the first questions you need to answer as a mobile developer. You might select the device based on personal preference or what looks cool today. The problem is that mobile technology choices are diverse and evolving quickly. The tools and languages used to develop native applications vary wildly and you probably cannot afford to learn them all. Chances are you want to find a way to replicate your application across multiple devices while minimizing your investment. How can that be done?read more

Terracotta had added native high-performance search to Ehcache, the open source de facto cache for enterprise Java, making it possible to do simple queries and real-time analysis on terabytes of in-memory data, overcoming in the process the latency of making queries to comparatively far distant databases.
Leveraging in-memory data stores in support of both transactional and analytical applications is supposed to make real-time query and analysis development costs cheaper because they both use the same native object level APIs. It could also save on hardware like Oracle’s Exadata machines.read more

XebiaLabs recently launched a new version of its deployment automation software. Deployit 3.0 promises to take away the risks associated with manual or scripted Java deployments, as well as out-of-date procedures. The end result: more productive DevOps teams.
Coert Baart, CEO, XebiaLabs, rightly points out that the escalating adoption of virtualization and cloud computing is causing increasingly complex application deployments -- especially with roles of development and operations teams crossing over.read more
I just got back from a month of travels throughout Thailand, struck by something I didn’t expect: water bottles. Lots and lots of water bottles. On beaches. Floating in the ocean. Strewn throughout the forest around a monk’s hut. In the hands of locals and tourists alike, because the tap water isn’t safe to drink. [...]
2010 is over and there has been a lot going on in the application performance space. We started this project at the beginning of the year inspired by Stoyan Stefanov’s performance advent calendar of 2009. (There is also one for 2010).
Now twelve months later we have our 2010 performance almanac available. According to Wikipedia an almanac is -”… an annual publication containing information in a particular field”. Our performance almanac contains nearly 50 articles of numerous topics around application performance.read more</a

Oracle has proposed replacing the Apache Software Foundation with SouJava, the Brazilian Java User Group, on the Java SE/EE Community Process (JCP) Executive Committee (EC).
The big 20,000-strong user group would be represented by Bruno Souza. There is no other user group on the committee, never has been.
Even the usually contrary Simon Phipps, Sun’s former open source advocate, who enjoys throwing brickbats at Oracle from off-stage, couldn’t find anything bad to say about the nomination, blogging that Bruno and SouJava may be able “to use their new position of influence to fix the broken things (like the opaque decision-making and the ability to have FOSS-hostile licensing terms on JSRs).”read more
